Vintage Bay Keramik 986-30 West German pottery vase, c. late 1960s–early 1970s
A striking and relatively scarce vintage vase by Bay Keramik of West Germany, model 986-30.
Standing approximately 30cm tall, this is a particularly sculptural Bay design, with a tall rectangular body covered in a deeply moulded repeating geometric relief. Abstract oval, circular and linear forms give the piece a distinctly Brutalist and mid-century architectural quality.
The glaze is especially tactile. Cream and ivory tones break across the raised decoration to reveal earthy dark browns beneath, while the shoulder and neck have a heavily textured, almost volcanic finish. The result is a wonderfully organic contrast between the precise geometric pattern and the deliberately irregular glaze.
